Budnah

Budnah is the sacrificial animal offered as a Dum or Kaffarah (Penalty) for making a deliberate or inadvertent mistake during the rituals of Hajj (Pilgrimage to the Ka’bah).

Bukhari

Imam Bukhari is known so because he was from Bukhara. He was a great scholar of Islam and is known for his great work of scientifically authenticating and compiling Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S). He traveled great distances to find and meet the narrators of Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S). He memorized all the Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S) he heard from the narrators. He researched the backgrounds of the entire chain of narrators of Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S). He evolved a scientific system of verification of the Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S). He had memorized more than 200,000 Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S). His scrutiny of the Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S) was so stringent that only approximately 1% of those Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S) made to his compilation. The compilation of Ahadith (Sayings of Muhammad S) by Imam Bukhari is considered to be the most authentic one and is known as Sahih Bukhari.

 

Bukhl  (Miserliness)

Allah (God) dislikes Bukhl (Miserliness) just as he dislikes spendthrifts. Islam always advocates moderation in all aspects of life.
 

Burqa’

Burqa’ is a gown that covers the entire body. Muslim women wear Burqa’ when they go outside their homes.

 

Surah (Chapter) al-Buruj (The Big Stars or The Zodiacal Signs)

Surah (Chapter) al-Buruj (The Big Stars or The Zodiacal Signs) is the 85th chapter of the Holy Qur-an. It is an early Makki Surah (Chapter) meaning that this Surah (Chapter) was revealed before the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S had migrated to Madinah. Surah (Chapter) al-Buruj (The Big Stars or The Zodiacal Signs) consists of twenty-two Ayat (Verses). It mentions that Allah (God) watches everything and He will severely  punish those who transgress the limits.

Dawud A (David)

Dawud A (David) was a Rasul (Messenger) of Allah (God). Allah (God) had given him a Divine Book Zabur (Psalms). Like other Divine Books, people altered Zabur (Psalms) also to suit their needs. The only Divine Book that remains in its original form is Qur-an, the final Message of Allah (God) that He gave to His last Rasul (Messenger), Muhammad S. Dawud A (David) was a descendent of Ibrahim A (Abraham) from the family of his younger son Ishaq A (Isaac). The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S was also a descendent of Ibrahim A (Abraham) from the family of his elder son Ismail A (Ishmael). Dawud A (David) was a just king for his people and was known for his judgments. He did not spend any money from the treasury of his kingdom for his personal use. He used to earn his living by making perfect armors. Da’wud A (David) spent a lot of his time in prayers in the late hours of night. Allah (God) had given special powers to Dawud A (David) by which birds had become obedient to him. Most of his people deserted Dawud A (David) when he was going to fight Jalut (Goliath). Allah (God) gave him victory over Jalut (Goliath) despite of his meager resources. Dawud (David) killed Jalut (Goliath) with one single shot of a stone.

Dhat ‘Irq

Dhat ‘Irq is the Miqat for pilgrims coming from Iraq or northeast of Makkah by land or air. Mawaqit (Plural of Miqat) are the places designated by the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S, where Pilgrims change into Ihram (Special dress for Hajj).

 

Dhul-Kifl A (Ezekiel)

Dhul-Kifl A (Ezekiel) was a Rasul (Messenger) of Allah (God). He is mentioned at several places in the Holy Qur-an (21:85-86; 38:48). Dhul-Kifl A (Ezekiel) was a Rasul (Messenger) sent to the Israelites. He commanded them to wage a war against the mischievous people, but they refused it for the fear of death. Allah (God) punished them with death by a plague and huge blasts. No one amongst them remained alive to even bury the dead. Dhul-Kifl A (Ezekiel) was praying to Allah (God) in seclusion for giving Hidayah (Guidance) to his people. When he came out, he saw the putrefied bodies of his followers. Although his people disobeyed him, he was deeply aggrieved by their fate. He made Du’a (Supplication) to Allah (God)  to give their lives back to them. Allah (God) listened to his request and brought the followers of Dhul-Kifl A (Ezekiel) back to life (The Holy Qur-an 2:280). Muslims believe in Dhul-Kifl A (Ezekiel) and all other Rusul (Messengers) of Allah (God).

 
Dhul Hijjah (12th month of Islamic calendar)

Dhul Hijjah literally means Owner of Hajj (Pilgrimage to the Ka’bah). The month of Dhul Hijjah is called so because the pilgrimage of Hajj (Pilgrimage to the Ka’bah) is carried out in this month. Dhul Hijjah is the 12th and the last month of the Islamic calendar. Similar to the Gregorian calendar, Islamic calendar also have twelve months beginning from the month of Muharram and ending with the month of Dhul Hijjah. Islamic calendar has approximately 355 days, ten days shorter than the Gregorian calendar has 365 days.

 

Dhul Hulayfah

Dhul Hulayfah is the Miqat for pilgrims coming from Madinah or north either by air or land. It is now called ‘Abyar ‘Ali. Mawaqit (Plural of Miqat) are the places designated by the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S, where Pilgrims change into Ihram (Special dress for Hajj).

 

Dinar

Dinar is the name of a currency that is still in use in several countries. Till some time ago, Dinar was used as a measure of weight until some time ago. One Dinar weighs 1 Mithqal, which is equivalent to 4.25 grams.

 

Dirham (595 grams)

Dirham is the name of a coin that was prevalent in the early Islamic period. Dirham as currency is still used in several countries like the United Arab Emirates.

 

Du’a (Supplications)

Du’a (Supplications) is asking for something from Allah (God). We must ask for everything from Allah (God) alone whether big or small. No one else in this universe is capable of granting even the tiniest little wish. One can make a Du’a (Supplications) to Allah (God) in any language one wishes.

Du’a (Supplications) is an integral part of Salah (Prayers). Surah (Chapter) al-Fatihah (The Opening) is also a Du’a (Supplications) that Allah (God) has taught us. It must be recited in every Rak’ah (Unit) of every Salah (Prayer). There are specific Du’a (Supplications) for ending the Salah (Prayers) and those must be recited in Arabic.

 

Duldul

Duldul was a white mule that Mokawkas, the ruler of Misr (Egypt) sent to the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S as a gift.

 

Dum (Rhymes with come)

Dum is also known as Kaffarah, which literally means to hide or atonement. It is a penalty for failing to perform certain rites in Hajj (Pilgrimage to the Ka’bah) or failing to perform them properly. It can also be a penalty, which a pilgrim pays for saying or doing an unlawful thing, which they are not supposed to do, while wearing their Ihram. A sacrifice is offered to Allah (God) as Kaffarah as a penalty for making deliberate or inadvertent mistakes during Hajj (Pilgrimage to the Ka’bah).

 
Fajr Salah (Morning Prayers)

There are five daily Fard (Compulsory) Salah (Prayers), which every Muslim adult must offer. Fajr Salah (Morning Prayers) is the first of these five compulsory Salah (Prayers). It is offered before the sunrise. Fajr Salah (Morning Prayers) consists of two Fard (Compulsory) Rak’ah (Units). These two Fard (Compulsory) Rak’ah (Units) are preceded by two Rak’ah (Units) of Muwakkadah Sunnah (Emphasized Tradition of Muhammad S).
