Sa’id bin Zayd R was the brother in-law of ‘Umar bin Khattab R, the second Khalifah (Caliph) of Muslims. Sa’id bin Zayd R was one of the as-Sabiqun al-Awwalun (Early converts to Islam).

His father Zayd bin ‘Amr R was also one of the as-Sabiqun al-Awwalun (Early converts to Islam).
Sa’id bin Zayd R sister 'Atikah R was married to ‘Abdullah bin Abu Bakr R.
After the death of ‘Abdullah bin Abu Bakr R, 'Umar bin Khattab R married her.

When 'Umar bin Khattab R achieved Shahadah (Martyrdom), Zubayr bin Al 'Awwam R married her.
Later, Zubayr bin Al 'Awwam R also achieved Shahadah (Martyrdom). Sa’id bin Zayd R was married to Fatimah R.

Fatimah bin Khattab R was a sister of ‘Umar bin Khattab R.

‘Umar bin Khattab R the second Khalifah (Caliph) of Muslims.

‘Umar bin Khattab R was a strong opponent of Islam, before he converted to Islam.

‘Umar bin Khattab R even wanted to kill Muhammad S to finish Islam, once for all.

He took out his sword and rushed towards Dar Arqam (House of Arqam R) where Muhammad S and his Sahabah (Companions) used to meet in the early days of Islam.

On the way, ‘Umar bin Khattab R met Na’yim bin ‘Abdullah R.

Na’yim bin ‘Abdullah R found out that ‘Umar bin Khattab R is going to physically hurt Muhammad S.

He told ‘Umar bin Khattab R that his own sister Fatimah bint Khattab R and her husband Sa’id bin Zayd R had also accepted Islam.

‘Umar bin Khattab R was outraged at this news.

In a fit of anger, he went to the house of Sa’id bin Zayd R, to take care of his sister and brother in-law first.

When ‘Umar bin Khattab R reached there, both Sa’id bin Zayd R and his wife Fatimah R were reciting Qur-an.

They were reciting Surah al Hadid Qur-an 57.

‘Umar bin Khattab R heard their recitation.

‘Umar bin Khattab R entered their house and beat up Sa’id bin Zayd R badly.

‘Umar bin Khattab R also hit his sister Fatimah R, when she tried to save her husband Sa’id bin Zayd R.
‘Umar bin Khattab R tried to force Sa’id bin Zayd R and Fatimah R to quit their new religion Islam, and return to the age old religion of their ancestors.

His merciless beatings did not yield any results.

When ‘‘Umar bin Khattab R got tired of beating them, his curiosity took over. He asked them to recite those strange verses back to him, which he heard while entering their house.

Sa’id bin Zayd R and Fatimah bint Khattab R recited those beautiful verses from Qur-an again. It resulted in a total change of heart of ‘Umar bin Khattab R.

He was awed by the truth in the words of Allah (God).

‘Umar bin Khattab R went straight to Dar Arqam (House of Arqam R) and converted to Islam immediately.

Sa’id bin Zayd R and his wife Fatimah R were instrumental in the conversion of ‘Umar bin Khattab R who became one of the great followers of Islam.

Sa’id bin Zayd R participated in all the battles fought for the cause of Islam.

He could not participate in the battle of Badr because Muhammad S had sent him on some mission.

Sa’id bin Zayd R was born in Makkah in the year 22BH (Before Hijrah) (600 AD). He died in Madinah in the year 51H (Hijrah) (671 AD).
