bin ‘Abdullah R
was a Sahabi
(Companion
of Muhammad
S).
Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
was among the as-Sabiqun
al-Awwalun
(Early
Muslims).
Quits
early days Muslims practiced Islam
secretly. People were told about Islam through
word of mouth only. Abu Bakr R,
a close friend of Muhammad S
was the first adult male to become a Muslim. Many
of the early Muslims were friends of Abu Bakr
R.
Most of them were Quraysh.
Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
became a Muslim because of the preaching of Abu
Bakr
R,
the first male converts to Islam.
Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
was from the family of Uwayj bin ‘Adi
bin Ka’b.
His
ancestor Ka’b bin Luw’i was
also an ancestor of Muhammad

Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
had accepted Islam before ‘Umar bin
Khattab
R
became a Muslim ‘Umar bin Khattab
was a strong opponent of Islam, before accepting
Islam.
In
the early days of Islam, there were two
strong enemies of Islam, ‘Umar bin
Khattab and
Abu Jahl bin Hisham.
Muhammad
S
used to pray to Allah (God)
for the change of heart of either of them.
The Quraysh
were very angry because their fellow tribesmen were accepting
Islam.
Islam
had become a threat to their existence because it advocated
a new system, which was based on human rights and social
equality. The Quraysh began torturing Muslims.
No amount of torture could deviate Muslims from
their faith. It greatly frustrated the Quraysh.
Once,
the Quraysh chiefs were discussing this
situation. ‘Umar bin Khattab
was also present there. He decided to kill Muhammad
S
to get rid of the root of the problem, once for all.
‘Umar
bin Khattab
had not accepted Islam till then. He took his sword
out of its cover and rushed towards Dar
(House of)
Arqam, where Muhammad
S
and his Sahabah (Companions)
used to live in hiding in the early days of Islam.
‘Umar
bin Khattab
had a reputation of a very fi…. Person. Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
met ‘Umar bin Khattab
on the way. He had never seen ‘Umar
bin Khattab
in such anger.
Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
asked about his intentions. ‘Umar
bin Khattab
told him that he is looking for Muhammad
S
to kill him. He told Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
that it will solve all problems of Quraysh.
Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
asked ‘Umar
bin Khattab
to look into his own family first.
Nu’aym
bin ‘Abdullah
R
told him that Fatimah bint
Khattab
R,
a sister of ‘Umar
bin Khattab
and her husband Sa’id bin
Zayd
R
had already accepted Islam.
‘Umar bin Khattab
was enraged at this news. He changed his mind and instead
of chasing Muhammad
S,
he rushed to his sister’s house. When ‘Umar
bin Khattab
reached the house of his brother in-law and his sister,
one of their friends Khubab
bin Arrat
R
was reciting Qur-an there. This made him
furious.
Khubab
bin Arrat
R
hid somewhere inside the house. Umar
bin Khattab
began beating up his brother in-law. When his sister Fatimah
bint Khattab
R
tried to save her husband, ‘Umar
bin Khattab
pushed her also. She got hurt and her forehead began to
bleed.
Better
sense prevailed upon ‘Umar
bin Khattab
After
seeing her sister hurt. He apologized to them. ‘Umar
bin Khattab
requested them to repeat the recitation, which he could
not properly listen to, because of his raging anger.
Fatimah
bint Khattab
R
and her husband Sa’id bin Zayd
R
recited the verses from Surah
Taha
(Qur-an
20) once again.
‘Umar
bin Khattab
went straight to Dar (House
of)
Arqam, where Muhammad
S
and other early Muslims were staying.
‘Umar
bin Khattab
R
became a Muslim there. He became one of the greatest
servant of Islam and become the second Khalifah
(Caliph)
of Muslims after Abu Bakr
R.
