'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R
was one of the early converts of Islam.
He
was a prominent Sahabi (Companion
of Muhammad S).
Both
the parents of 'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R
belonged to Banu (Family of)
Zuhrah clan of the Quraysh tribe.
Banu
(Family of) Zuhrah
clan was named after Zuhrah bin Kilab.
Zuhrah
bin Kilab was great-grandfather
of Aminah bint Wahb, the mother of Muhammad
S.
Zuhrah
bin Kilab had a younger brother
named Qusayy bin Kilab.
Qusayy
bin Kilab was the first Quraysh
caretaker of Ka'bah.
Kilab
bin Murrah, the father of Zuhrah
bin Kilab, was an ancestor of
'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R
as well as Muhammad S.
The
given name of 'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R
was 'Abdul Ka'bah or 'Abd 'Amr. These names
meant the servant of Ka'bah or the servant
of 'Amr.
Muhammad
S changed these name to 'Abdur Rahman
R, when he became a Muslim. It means servant
of Allah.
'Auf
bin 'Abd 'Auf, the father of 'Abdur
Rahman R, was a trader. Once 'Abdur Rahman
bin 'Auf R
went to a trading trip with his father.
'Uthman
R and his father 'Affan bin
al 'As, and Fakah bin Mughirah,
the uncle of Khalid bin Walid
R were
also in this caravan to Yaman.
The
Banu Jazimah tribe attacked their caravan.
His
father 'Auf bin 'Abd 'Auf and
Fakah bin Mughirah, the
uncle of Khalid bin Walid
R were
killed in this attack. 'Abdur Rahman
bin 'Auf R
killed the murderer of his father.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R had abandoned drinking long before accepting
Islam.
He
became a Muslim because of the of Abu Bakr R.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R
was among the as-Sabiqin al-Awwalin
(Early convert to Islam).
He was probably the thirteenth person to accept Islam.
He
was also one of the 'Asharah Mubashsharah (Ten
companions of Muhammad
S, who were given the news of
Heaven, in their lifetime).
He
migrated to Habash (Ethiopia)
during the first Hijrah (Migration),
in the year 9BH (Before Hijrah) (613
AD). He had left his family in Makkah.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R returned to Makkah some time later.
He
migrated to Yathrib (Madinah)
in the great Hijrah (Migration).
In
Yathrib (Madinah),
'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R stayed with Sa'd bin
Rabi'
R, an Ansar.
When
Muhammad S migrated to Madinah,
he tied a Muhajir (Migrant)
Muslim
with an Ansar Muslim, in brotherhood.
This brotherhood was called Muwakhah
(Brotherhood).
Ansar
means Helper.
Muslims
of Madinah were called Ansar,
because they helped the Muhajir (Migrant)
Muslims of Makkah.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R became a brother of Sa'd
bin Rabi' R.
Sa'd
bin Rabi' R
showed exemplary sacrifice towards his Muhajir
(Migrant) brother.
He
divided all of his belongings into two portions and offered
one of them to 'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R.
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R thanked
him very much and asked Sa'd bin 'Auf
R to show him the bazaar, instead.
He
started trading in the bazaar of Qaynuqa',
from the next morning after migrating to Madinah.
He started out with cheese and other dairy products.
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R was exceptionally
successful in trading. One of his trading caravans had seven
hundred (700) camels loaded with grain
and other commodities.
He
married Sahlah bint 'Asim
R, in Madinah.
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R participated
in all of the battles with Muhammad S.
He
fought very bravely in the Battle of Badr in
2H (Hijrah) (623 AD).
In
the Battle of Uhud, he was one of the
few Sahabah (companions
of Muhammad S), who shielded Muhammad
S.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R
received twenty-one (21) wounds all
over his body in the battle.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'AufR could not walk straight for the rest of his life,
because of a wound on one of his legs.
In
the month of Sha'ban (Eighth
month of Islamic calendar), of the
year 6H (Hijrah) (627 AD), Muhammad
S sent a Sariyyah (Military
mission sent by Muhammad S) to
Daumatul Jindal.
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R was made
the Commander of the seven hundred (700) strong
force. Muhammad S personally took the turban
of 'Abdur Rahman bin 'Auf
R off and
then tied a black turban on his head. Muhammad S
also presented a Liwa (Flag)
to him
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R invited
the people of Domah to Islam.
Asbagh
bin 'Amr, chief of the Christian
tribe Kalb, converted to Islam
with many of his followers. He also married his daughter Tamadhar
to 'Abdur Rahman bin 'Auf
R
as a gesture of friendship and trust.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'AufR took part in the Ghazwah
(Military mission, in which Muhammad
S personally took part) of Tabuk.
There,
he got the rare honor to lead the Salah Fajr
(Morning Prayers) in the presence
of Muhammad S.
In
the year 13H (Hijrah) (635 AD),
'Umar bin Khattab
R, the
second Khalifah (Caliph)
of Muslims, could not go for Hajj
(The annual pilgrimage to Ka'bah).
He deputed 'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R as the Amir Hajj
(Leader for Hajj).
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R
was also a member of the Shura
(Advisory Committee) of
'Umar bin Khattab
R.
In
the year 14H (Hijrah)
(635 AD),
a large Muslim army was raised. This army was to be
sent to 'Iraq, to reinforce the Muslim
forces there. Muslim forces were already fighting there
under the command of Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas
R.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R was made the commander of Maymanah
(Left wing).
People
wanted the Khalifah (Caliph)
of Muslims to lead the army.
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R opposed
this popular demand. He reasoned that 'Umar bin
Khattab R,
the Khalifah (Caliph)
of Muslims should stay back to provide leadership
to them. 'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R
proposed the name of Sa'd bin Malik
R to lead
this Muslim army. Every one liked his choice.
In
the year 23H (Hijrah) (643 AD),
'Umar bin Khattab
R, the
second Khalifah (Caliph)
of Muslims performed his last Hajj
(The annual pilgrimage to Ka'bah).
'Umar bin Khattab
R had made
arrangements to take the holy wives of Muhammad
S, with him for Hajj. 'Abdur Rahman
bin 'Auf R
and 'Uthman bin 'Affan
R escorted
the ladies.
'Uthman
bin 'Affan R
later became the third Khalifah
(Caliph) of Muslims.
A
few days after returning from this Hajj (The
annual pilgrimage to Ka'bah), 'Umar
bin Khattab R
stood up to lead the Salah Fajr (Morning
Prayers) in the Masjid Nabi
(Mosque of the Messenger). A
Persian slave named Firoz (Abu Lulu),
stabbed him with a dagger.
'Umar
bin Khattab R,
the second Khalifah (Caliph)
of Muslims was seriously injured in this attack.
This
incident took place on Wednesday, the 26th day of Zul
Hijjah (Twelfth month of
the Islamic calendar) in the
year 23H (November 2, 644 AD).
'Umar
bin Khattab R
pulled 'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R near him and asked him to lead the Salah
(Prayers). Most of the Muslims
found out about the attack on the life of their Khalifah
(Caliph), only after the Salah
(Prayers) were over.
'Umar
bin Khattab R,
achieved Shahadah (Martyrdom)
three days later.
He
was laid to rest in his grave by 'Uthman
bin 'Affan R,
'Ali bin Abu Talib R,
Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas
R, Zubayr
bin Al 'Awwam R
and 'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R.
'Umar
bin Khattab R
was buried in the room of 'A'ishah bint
Abu Bakr R,
near the feet of Muhammad S.
Abu
Bakr R the first Khalifah
(Caliph) of Muslims was
also buried there earlier.
Before
his death 'Umar bin Khattab
R had nominated
a panel of six Sahabah (Companions
of Muhammad S). The next Khalifah
(Caliph) of Muslims was
to be elected from this panel.
This
panel had the following six:
- 'Uthman
bin 'Affan R
- 'Ali
bin Abu Talib R
- Sa'd
bin Abu Waqqas R
- Zubayr
bin Al 'Awwam R
- Talhah
bin 'Ubaydullah R
and
- 'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R
Selection
of the next Khalifah (Caliph)
from this distinguished panel was not an easy task.
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R helped
resolve this difficult situation. He was one of the richest
Muslims. Still, he was a very humble person. He voluntarily
withdrew himself out of the panel although he had the same
support among the Muslims as 'Ali bin
Abu Talib R
and 'Uthman bin 'Affan
R.
After
three (3) days of discussions, 'Uthman
bin 'Affan R
was elected as the third (3rd)
Khalifah
(Caliph) of Muslims.
In
the year 24H (Hijrah) (644 AD),
'Uthman bin 'Affan
R the third
(3rd) Khalifah
(Caliph) of Muslims could
not go for Hajj (The
annual pilgrimage to Ka'bah). He deputed
'Abdur Rahman bin
'Auf R
as the Amir Hajj (Leader
for Hajj).
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R was very
close to 'Uthman bin 'Affan
R. He always
supported him.
'Abdur
Rahman bin
'Auf R
was a very generous person. He used to donate large amounts
of money to the poor and needy. He also spent a lot of money
for the cause of Islam.
He
had donated forty thousand (40,000)
Dinar
twice. He had also donated five hundred (500)
horses and five hundred (500) camels
for the Muslim army.
Once
he sold a piece of land for forty thousand (40,000)
Dinar
to 'Uthman bin 'Affan
R. He distributed
a major part of this amount among the needy of his clan Banu
(Family of) Zuhrah
of the Quraysh tribe.
He
also gifted a part of this money to the holy wives of Muhammad
S. He had earlier given them an orchard, which was sold
for four hundred thousand (400,000)
Dinar.
He
donated forty thousand (40,000) horses
to the cause of Allah, a little before his death.
He
also gifted four hundred (400)
Dinar
for each of the Sahabah Badr (Companions
of Muhammad S, who fought with him in
the Battle of Badr). At that time
about one hundred (100) of them were
alive.
He
used to issue Fatawa (Religious
judgments) during the lifetime of Muhammad
S.
'Abdur
Rahman bin 'Auf
R died
in the year 32H (Hijrah) (652 AD).
His
Salah Janazah (Funeral
Prayers) was led by 'Uthman
bin 'Affan R
the third (3rd) Khalifah
(Caliph) of Muslims.
